Dragon Traveler PvP Guide: Every Mode, Its Rules and Best Units
All seven Dragon Traveler PvP modes explained: Arena, Colosseum, Points League, Advanced Points Match, Holy King Contest, Realm Clash and Cloudborne War.

Quick answer: Dragon Traveler has seven PvP modes: Arena, Colosseum, Points League, Advanced Points Match, Holy King Contest, Realm Clash and Cloudborne War. Each rewards something different: Arena and Points League reward a strong daily team, Colosseum rewards fast clears, the Holy King Contest rewards ten deep 1v1 duelists, and Cloudborne War rewards depth in two named factions. Build for the mode you actually play.
Key takeaways
- Arena: 5 free attempts a day (reset 5:00), ranks pay out at 21:00, and a battle that times out counts as a loss for the attacker.
- Colosseum is a 20-stage time attack in 14-day seasons. Only players who clear all 20 stages are ranked, by total time.
- The Holy King Contest qualifiers need 10 different Luminaries in 1v1 matches decided by remaining HP % at the 1-minute mark.
- Advanced Points Match needs Champion rank in the Points League each season and uses 3-team, best-of-three fights.
- Cloudborne War names 2 factions each round; every team, dragon included, must use one of them.
- The kit data flags 25 Luminaries as strong in the Holy King Contest, more than any other mode.

Guild War, a guild activity with its own scoring, is covered in our guild guide.
Arena
The Arena is the everyday ladder: challenge any Ringsworn on your list not already in a battle, and beat a higher-ranked defender to swap ranks.
- Attempts: 5 free a day, reset at 5:00, and unused ones do not carry over. You can buy more with Diamonds while purchases remain, and each purchase costs more than the last.
- Rewards: ranks settle every day at 21:00 and pay by mail. Beating your best-ever rank pays a one-time bonus. Arena Coins buy items in the Arena Store, and reaching set ranks unlocks value packs bought with Arena Coins.
- Defence: you set a defence team on its own screen, and you can review recent battle reports.
What wins: a battle that runs out of time is a loss for the attacker. That favours defences that are hard to finish, such as units that cheat death or stall. Poseidon, whose roles include "stalls the fight" and "cheats death", is the clearest example in the kit data. On attack, you need enough burst to close the fight before the timer.
Colosseum
The Colosseum is a time attack. You take up to 3 Luminaries who fight one on one in turn, and you can tap a portrait to switch who is fighting.
- Only the first win on a stage gives a reward; replays only improve your best time.
- Every stage has a stage buff and a speed target whose tasks pay well.
- Stages come in groups of 5, and a group opens once its time and speed conditions are met.
- Fielding enough of the recommended Luminaries lowers your final time, and recommended Luminaries count as 6 stars higher here.
- Seasons last 14 days, each with a season buff. At season end the Colosseum resets and pays by rank.
- Only players who clear all 20 stages are ranked, by total time. Ties go to the shorter real battle time.
- Overdrive energy recovers faster, and the classes are rebalanced.
What wins: speed. Check the recommended list each season before you build, because the 6-star bonus can make a lightly invested unit perform like a heavily invested one. The kit data flags these Luminaries for Colosseum:
- Colosseum: Gabriel, Fenrir, Chiron, Lorilin, Hitomi, Jing, Lilith, Loki
- High-tier Colosseum: Ifrit, Poseidon
- Now and then: Himiko
Fenrir is worth a note for newer players. She is one of the three starter Luminaries, and her Overdrive, Hunting Time, resets its cooldown when its target is defeated, and her talent adds 25-41% Lifesteal while any enemy is below 50% HP. That kind of reset is exactly what a one-at-a-time time attack rewards.
Points League
The Points League runs every week from Monday 6:00 to Sunday 24:00. You get a fixed number of attempts a day and are matched against players of similar strength.
- A found match uses an attempt, and quitting partway does not refund it.
- From a certain rank up, some of the opponent's Luminaries are hidden as silhouettes, and more are hidden the higher you go.
- You can cast skills by hand.
- Results earn points, points set your rank, and ranking rewards are paid by points at the end of each week.
What wins: at higher ranks you cannot fully see what you are fighting, so a balanced team that does not depend on a hard counter performs better than a narrow one. Manual casting helps here: holding a control Overdrive until the enemy carry commits is something the auto AI does not do well.
Advanced Points Match
This is the upper tier of the Points League, for players who reach Champion rank there. The entry requirement resets every season.
- Season: settles weekly; 4 weeks make a season, then all points, ranks and standings reset.
- Attempts: 3 free challenges a day. Tickets pay for more; your Points League rank sets how many tickets you get daily and how many more you can buy.
- Points: wins gain points and losses cost them, both on attack and when you are attacked. Only your first 10 successful defences each day gain points.
- Ranks: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Master, King, each with divisions IX to I. Only the top 100 on the points board can be King; everyone else stops at Master.
- Battles: you are offered 3 opponents, each with more points than the last. Each fight is 3 teams against 3, and you need 2 wins.
- Rewards: Honor Insignia accrue over time (more at higher ranks) for the Advanced Store, a one-time promotion reward for each new rank in a season, and ranking-band rewards for the top 100 at King.
What wins: depth. Three full teams have to pull their weight, so this is where a broad roster beats a single stacked team. Picking the highest-point opponent you can reliably beat is usually better than farming the lowest.
Holy King Contest
The Holy King Contest is the most demanding PvP mode and the one most kits are tuned for.
Season and sign-up
- A season is three weeks. The first two weeks run on your server on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday; the third runs across servers on Thursday and Saturday as Realm Clash.
- Sign-up is open from 5:10 to 19:50 on match days and needs a full team of 10 Luminaries.
- Players with a Primordial Dragon III or better, and the last contest's top 20, are signed up automatically at the deadline, unless they have been away for a long time.
- After week two, the season's top 8 represent the server.
Qualifiers (20:00 to 20:25)
You play 10 matches with one different Luminary each, and no Luminary can be used twice. Each match has 1 minute 30 seconds of preparation (locked for the last 30 seconds) and lasts 1 minute. If both Luminaries are still standing, the higher remaining HP % wins. The top 8 go to the finals, and losses never eliminate you, so you can experiment.
Skills fire more often and Overdrive energy recovers faster here, the classes are rebalanced, and both sides go berserk twice as a match drags on.
Finals (20:25 to 20:35)
Quarter-final, semi-final and final, single elimination for the day. Each match uses 3 Luminaries who fight in turn, none used twice, and lasts 2 minutes. The side with more Luminaries alive wins, then the higher remaining HP %.
Betting and rankings
From sign-up until the qualifiers end you can bet Diamonds on one of the last contest's top 20. The return depends on their final place, how many others backed them and when you bet. Match ranking goes by finals wins, then total wins, then qualifier points. Season ranking goes by finals wins, then finals played, then qualifier points.
What wins the Holy King Contest
Two rules shape the meta: one minute per qualifier match, and remaining HP % as the tiebreak. A good duelist either kills fast or ends the minute healthier than the opponent. Units that survive lethal damage do both jobs. Some examples from the kits:
- Ares: on first lethal damage she becomes Invincible for 2s, puts nearby enemies in Time Stasis for 5s and burns Energy to restore up to full HP.
- Hades: Death Rattle stacks block fatal damage (0 stacks for the first block, 7 for the second), and her Overdrive resets and refunds 4 Overdrive Points on a kill.
- Loki: Invincible and Untargetable for 5s when HP first drops below 50%, healing 30-70% of Max HP; a talent node adds a second trigger below 30%.
- Caesar: immune to one lethal hit every 25 seconds, healing per Shield of Protection stack.
- Prometheus: cuts all enemies' Crit Damage by 32-50% and caps the Crit Damage of hits she takes, which blunts burst duelists.
Because you need 10 different Luminaries for the qualifiers, your 9th and 10th picks matter as much as your first. Use the preparation phase before each match to reorder the Luminaries you have not used yet, and since losses never knock you out of the qualifiers, treat early contests as a chance to test which units win their minute.
Every Luminary the kit data flags for the Holy King Contest (25): Hades, Ares, Artemis, Loki, Prometheus, Asmodeus, Azure Dragon, Caesar, Dvalin, Hitomi, Ningrose, Pompey, Rin, Salome, Zagreus, Orion, Faust, Tyrfing, Marylis, Fenrir, Lorilin, Jormungandr, Beowulf, White Tiger and Siegfried.
It includes three SSR units and the starter Siegfried, which helps a lighter account fill ten slots.
Realm Clash
Realm Clash is the cross-server week of the Holy King Contest.
- Servers that opened around the same time are grouped into zones of up to 8 servers, and entry is automatic.
- Thursday: up to 64 players (the top 8 of each server) fight for the top 8 places. Saturday: those 8 fight for the season title.
- Matches run from 19:50:00 to 20:10:30, single elimination.
- You bring 3 teams; each match uses one, and each team plays once. In the 10 minutes before the start you can only change the order of your teams, not who is in them or where they stand.
- Each match has 1 minute 30 seconds of preparation (locked for the last 30) and lasts 2 minutes; higher remaining HP % wins.
- After Saturday, every server gets a winner's red envelope at the tier of its best-placed player, claimable by everyone there with Realm Clash open until the season ends.
- Ranking: total wins, then matches played, then points. Rewards arrive by mail at 5:00 the day after Saturday's matches.
What wins: lock your team compositions well before 19:50. In the last 10 minutes you can only reshuffle their order.
Cloudborne War
Cloudborne War pits whole servers against each other once a week.
- Matching: Saturday 5:00 to 9:00. From 6:00 you can view your opponent and set teams. Only servers open 25 days or more are matched.
- War: Saturday 9:00 until Monday 21:00 the following week. From 9:00 to 21:00 each day you can attack or take revenge.
- Format: two teams. Each round names 2 factions, and each team must use one of them, Luminaries and dragon alike. Battles are king of the hill: the winner stays on to face the next team, and beating both enemy teams wins.
- Ranks and flowers: your first entry gives you a rank that produces Cloud Flowers and points over time, more at higher ranks. Beating an enemy-server player steals Cloud Flowers and they lose a share. Rank rewards settle at 21:00 daily.
- Result: the server with the higher combined points wins, counting the same number of players on each side. The grand prize grows with participation, each server's share follows its share of the points, and it arrives by mail after the Monday 21:00 settlement.
What wins: faction depth. Two teams from two named factions, with a matching dragon each, is a roster-wide check. Because most Luminaries belong to two factions, a dual-faction unit that covers both of the round's factions is especially valuable. Use our factions page to see which of yours qualify.
Participation grows the grand prize for your whole server, so enter even with a weak team.
PvP ratings from the kit data
Separate from the mode tags, each kit carries a PvP rating. These are the highest-rated Luminaries for PvP:
| PvP rating | Luminaries |
|---|---|
| SS | Poseidon, Artemis, Lilith, Vivienne, Atanith |
| S+ | Athena, Loki, Hela, Asmodeus, Faust, Morgana, Prometheus, Spimo, Talos |
Two other mode tags are worth knowing. Artemis and Poseidon are the two Luminaries flagged for Guild War. Pan Junbao is tagged for interrupts and specifically "against Poseidon": she opens every battle with a 5-second Taunt and her Featherweight Force intercepts ranged basic attacks in an area, which makes her a niche counter pick rather than a general build.
Atanith is the only SSR on the top line: her Overdrive raises every enemy Luminary's next Overdrive cost by 1 and can Silence through Punishment.
For overall placements, see the tier list; for full lineups, see team builds. Terms like Punishment and Death Rattle are explained in the glossary.
FAQ
Which PvP mode should a new player focus on?
Arena and the Points League. Both run every day or every week with one team, pay steady rewards, and do not need the deep roster that the Holy King Contest, Advanced Points Match and Cloudborne War demand.
How do I enter the Advanced Points Match?
Reach Champion rank in the Points League. The requirement resets every 4-week season, so you need to earn it again each season.
What decides a Holy King Contest match that does not end in a kill?
The higher remaining HP %. In the finals, the side with more Luminaries alive wins first, then remaining HP %. Healing and cheat-death effects therefore count even when they do not win the fight outright.
Can my server join Cloudborne War right away?
No. Only servers that have been open for 25 days or more are matched.
How many Luminaries do I need for the Holy King Contest?
Ten. Sign-up requires a full team of 10, and each qualifier match uses a different Luminary.
